Janahn forest
This hardy sub-aquatic plant is native to the inland waterways of Australia.
Grows well at Janahn Forest Permaculture Farm, where it is planted in areas that are periodically
inundated with water. Observed to grow in dam water .5 m deep. As waters recede it follows the
waterline to form thick swathes. Ideal for stabilizing steep dam walls. We are also planting it
extensively in the basins of swales and adgingbongs.
It was once a common food of aboriginal people,
however it must be treated to eliminate toxicity
. Nardoo is an important flood-time food for waterfowl.
